Cowichan, ‘The Warm Land’ was aptly named long ago by the First Nations peoples. The Cowichan Valley offers one of our nation’s finest climates. Canada’s only maritime Mediterranean climatic zone boasts the warmest mean, year-round temperatures as well as the country’s longest growing season.
Once Upon A Day… Cowichan
By DV Cuisine
The Cowichan Valley is Vancouver Island’s wine country. Sheltered by a ridge of high mountains on the west and warmed by the ocean to the east, Cowichan shares similar growing conditions to the northern regions of Germany & France. Our warm summers, temperate mild winters and gravelly soils suit some recognizable grape varietals like Pinot Gris, Pint Noir, Ortega, and Marechal Foch.
Our wineries, most of which are within 15 minutes of each other, produce classic reds, whites and sparkling wines. Cowichan’s terrior is ideal for growing Pinot grapes, and the resulting wines are gaining great respect on the world stage. Fruit wines, blackberry port-style wines, ciders, vodkas, gin and brandies round out the list of fine libations unique to the Cowichan Region.
Most of the wineries in the valley are small and family-owned. Some welcome picnickers. Others offer restaurants and dining facilities or beautiful venues for events, meetings and conferences. It’s become very popular to host weddings in vineyards!
Cowichan celebrates the farm to table food movement! Gardens large and small are tended and revered. Markets, Restaurants, and Families value local sources for the freshest organic meat and produce. Enjoy an abundance of creative local cuisine featuring seafood, local meats, sea salt, blackberries, mushrooms, honey, maple syrup, cheese, & vinegars. Coffee roasters and tea blenders; chefs, bakers and chocolate-makers all call Cowichan home.
Whether your appetite is for structured attractions that inform, entertain or educate, or for more active outdoor pursuits, the Cowichan region offers an abundance of activities that are sure to please.
